She raised her left hand and held it in front of the moon so that her forefinger and thumb seemed to be grasping it. Then, in one smooth movement, she plucked at it. For a moment, it looked like she had taken the moon from the sky, but then Shadow saw that the moon shone still, and Zorya Polunochnaya opened her hand to display a silver Liberty-head dollar resting between finger and thumb.

Chapter Four

Zorya Polunochnaya is one of the Old Gods, and comes from Slavic mythology. She represents the Midnight Star and has two sisters, Zorya Utrennyaya (Morning Star) and Zorya Vechernyaya (Evening Star).

Physical appearance Edit

Zorya Polunochnaya is the youngest and the tallest of the three sisters. She has no wrinkles, dark eyes, long lashes, and white hair down to her waist.

Notes and trivia Edit

  • The Zorya sisters are based on two guardian goddesses of Slavic mythology. The two goddesses represent the Auroras, watching over the doomsday hound, Simargl. Zorja Utrennjaja is the Morning Star and associated with Venus while Zorja Vechernjaja is the Evening Star and associated with Mercury. A third sister is described in some versions of the myth, however, Zorya Polunochnaya was created specifically by Neil Gaiman for the novel.
  • Zorya Polunochnaya gives Shadow a 1922 liberty-head silver dollar.
