Samantha Black Crow gives Shadow a ride while driving through Illinois and drops him off at Ibis and Jacquel Funeral Parlor.

Background

Sam is spiritually cynical for someone who claims to believe in so much. They live life with fierce confidence and openness, selling the chainsaw art they carve by the roadside for extra money.

"Muninn"

Shadow reaches a highway and is almost hit by an old Ford Bronco with "wash me" written in the dust on the back window. It pulls into the gas station and Shadow follows. He puts on his charm as he enters the gas station and grabs a bottle of water and a map for $7.02. He asks for change for his twenty dollar bill, distracting the cashier from seeing it is actually a ten dollar bill. She begins to give him $13 change as he gives her another $3 and confuses her into giving him "back" his $20. The driver of the bronco (Sam Black Crow) catches him and makes him buy them $20 of gas to not expose his scam to the cashier.

Shadow follows Sam out to their car and asks them for a ride to Cairo, which is actually pronounced "Kay-ro." Shadow explains away his disheveled appearance that he fell hiking and they call him a liar. They snap a Polaroid of him for "evidence" and offer him a ride.

An "Argus" drone flies overhead tracking Shadow and Sam before it is knocked out of the sky by a raven.

Shadow plays with his silver dollar coin as Sam drives them to Cairo. They ask if he ever heard of Finds Them and Kills Them. He was a Crow Nation warrior, and two-spirited like them. Shadow notices the tattoo of a bison skull on their bicep and asks if they are human. They reply that because they have two spirits in one body, they would have been considered godlike at one time.

As Shadow sleeps in the passenger seat, Sam sneaks another Polaroid of him. They write on it with a sharpie. Shadow wakes up and they ask if he is hungry.

Sam and Shadow have stopped at a roadside food truck called "Cats and Dogs" that sells catfish and hotdogs. He explains to them that he needs to find "Egyptians" in Cairo and they know what he is referring to. He begins to tell them about Laura as their order is called.

Sam gives Shadow the Polaroid they took of him sleeping earlier where they had written, "Blackcrow meets Sleeping Beauty." Shadow talks about his nightmares of buffalo and skulls and how he is looking for peace. Sam sympathizes with him and tells him how their full-Cherokee father called them a half-breed and their mother raised them with a bible so they found a home in the stories of their ancestors. They arrive at "Ibis and Jacquel Funeral Home 1863" and they finally exchange names.

Notes and trivia

• Devery Jacobs was a fan of the book before being cast
  • She is Kanien'keha:ka and grew up on a reservation
  • Although she is queer, unlike Samantha Black Crow (who is Cherokee), she does not identify as Two-spirited since that term is not used within her Kanien’kehá:ka community
• While being the first choice for the role, Jacobs almost lost it due to a filming conflict. However, she wrote a letter expressing her gratitude for being cast in the first place, which convinced Neil Gaiman to push the production team to keep her as the actress for Sam.
