Welcome to the world of American Gods

American Gods is a one-hour drama on Starz based upon Neil Gaiman's novel of the same name.

It stars Ricky Whittle as Shadow Moon and Ian McShane as Mr. Wednesday and depicts a growing conflict between "Old Gods" and "New Gods".

The 2017 season showed us how the traditional gods of mythological roots from around the world were bleeding followers to the "New Gods", an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs.

In the 2019 season, the battle moves ever closer to a crisis point. The destinies of gods and men collide. While Mr. World seeks revenge for the attack against him in Season One, Shadow joins Wednesday, Laura and Mad Sweeney to demonstrate to the Old Gods that all-out war is needed.

After a council at the House on the Rock spectacularly fails to unite the factions, both Old and New Gods embark on quests across America that will lead them to Cairo, Illinois. Ultimately, Shadow is forced to carve out a place as a believer in this strange new world of living gods — a dark world where change demands commitment, and faith requires terrible sacrifice.

As with a lot of great television, American Gods started life as a novel. 2001's Hugo- and Nebula-winning American Gods is the base text. Anansi Boys is another novel, but it features Mr Nancy and is largely unrelated to the American Gods storyline. A couple of other, shorter works are more "sequel-ish", though they appear in anthologies of unrelated short stories.
