Rewatching season 2

Well, I started rewatching the season 2 episodes, this time with subtitles.

I honestly changed my opinion a lot on it. When I first saw it, I thought it was confusing, with a lot of elements I missed and a lot of things were left unclear. But turns out, it's not.

When one watches the episodes one after another, with subtitles, and with a broader knowledge of the entire season, a lot of the questions I asked myself are actually explained or not even existing. I guess I also was a bit too engulfed in the previous season, and thus I tried to impose its patterns and ideas on the second season a bit too much, I didn't try to look at the season for itself, which is actually a bad thing to do in my idea, because the two season clearly have a very …

I'm back! You never knew I was gone, did you?

Just a short blog to apologize for my inactivity on the Wiki. I actually was away without Internet for a long time. I still could connect from time to time (half-an-hour per day or about it), and it allowed me to post some pictures in the gallery, but I never had time to do more.

This far-away time allowed me to collect more information for Mama-ji's cultural background section. Kali is a well known figure to me, but one difficult to explain to newcomers, and one that especially needs back up when it comes to the details. I hope I have enough sources and material to make a nice, full, but concise section.

I also happened to find out that the American Gods visual novel got released in France! I found it in a shop, at a train station. I haven…

Do you know about this website?

People who were on the Internet and American Gods fandom long before the series came out will probably know or remember this website, but now it is buried under a ton of other websites, so I'll mention it here:

"only the gods are real"

It is a fan website dedicated to the Old Gods of American Gods (the book).

Here is the home page: http://www.frowl.org/gods/index.html

It is extremely interesting in its detail and analysis of the mythology. It only contains three pages, but they are worth a look.

First, a page listing all of the Old Gods in the book with their name, mythologies and legends, including background gods: http://www.frowl.org/gods/gods.html

Second, a page compiling all the theories, ideas and debates concerning the "forgotten god" o…

Colin Penman BTS: Season 1

I finally found the source of the leaked picture of fat-Technical Boy. It's from the Instagram account of Colin Penman, an expert at makeup and special effects that works on American Gods. He released a lot of sweet, cool and very interesting pictures, so I'll upload them here, not only for educational purpose, but also to see if some of these could be used in pages galleries.

Note: these are only the pictures for season 1.

  • 1 Emily Browning
  • 2 Easter's party
  • 3 Lucy Ricardo
  • 4 The Old Gods

There's a lot of pictures of Emily Browning. Some of her as an undead, armless zombie, but most are about her transformation into Essie MacGowan. Colin Penman is especially proud of her freckles. …

Media (as in the book)

My second study for the New Gods book-verse will be: Media, the goddess of television. I know I should treat her on the third position, given that she is the third New God Shadow encounters after the Spookshow, but since the Spookshow is made up of many people, I’ll keep it for later.

Media. In many ways, the opposite of the Technical Boy. She appears at first sweet, charming, seducing – but she has difficulties hiding her dark, threatening, sadistic nature. Contrary to what her name suggests, Media isn’t really the goddess of all the medias. In the TV show, Media’s character plays fully on the ideas of mass-media and pop-culture, but in the book she is mostly the embodiment of the most popular form of mass-media in the 90s: television.

Thoughts after the finale

So, I did previously a non spoiler blogpost about my opinion on season 2. Now, I just want to compile here a series of thoughts I had after the finale. Spoilers ahead, and it's mostly new-god centric so beware.

Thought 1: There's missing stuff

In the promotional material for season 2, there was a picture of New Media and Technical Boy. He was small in some sort of cube, and she was a giant, looking at him with a pitying look… But I don’t remember this scene in any episode of season 2… Is it deleted material? Will there be deleted scenes in the DVD release?

There's another missing segment that was in the trailer. There was a shot of what seemed like Technical Boy entering a big white house filled with young people vaping and visibly high. Ther…

Moon Shadow Review

After such a long hiatus, I can't believe this season is already over! I'm still not certain whether it was better or worse than the first season but I'm planning on writing a Season Two Review post and will figure it out then.

  • 1 Highlights
  • 2 General Thoughts
    • 2.1 Thoughts from before
  • 3 Lowlights
  • 4 Discussion
    • 4.1 Fear
    • 4.2 Laura

  • This opening might be the best one yet of the season, possibly even better than the CEO opening in 2x04
    • Fake new coming from FOKS (Fox) sponsored by the NRA. 😂😭😭 I've lost once perfectly reasonable and normal family members to the Fox News cult
    • The whole "fear" monologue 👍👍 This deserves its own mini discussion point

My opinion on season 2 (no spoiler)

Since I’ve watched the final episode, I am able to give my full insight on this second season.

I liked it. Maybe less than the first one, but I still liked it.

Yeah, it was a bit jumbled, confused. They threw things they couldn’t follow, they had to abandon some arc, or put on fillers or elements without much coherence to put things together.

BUT. They introduced wonderful themes they managed to exploit during all of the show. They had wonderful ideas. They managed to correct behind-the-scenes trouble in clever ways. And there were great moments and wonderful episodes.

All in all, whether you think this season was good or bad, you can’t say that it wasn’t a necessary one. This season was meta in the sense that it was about being reborn, and t…

Treasure of the Sun Review

This week's review for "Treasure of the Sun," aka "The Madness of King Sweeney." Just as a warning, I'm going to be invoking New Media and using a lot of emojis.

  • Mad Sweeney 🍺👨‍🦰🍺
    • King Sweeney's hair in that one scene with his pregnant wife...my gods, it's luxurious!
    • In the book, Sweeney briefly returns as a ghost so I have hope it's not the complete end of Sweeney in the series. This deserves a discussion
  • Mama-ji as Smashana Kali! 😱 I also LOVED the interaction between Mama-ji and Laura. I really want to see more of them together.

Only American Gods fan will get the jokes

"Joke" 1 :

So, apparently, Thot was really respect by all the Egyptian gods for his knowledge and his intelligence, but they also all thought of him as boring and annoying because he talked a lot. Like a lot. He used complicated sentences, kept making digressions, sounded really pompous… The character of Fan-Boy in Freakazoid? That was him.

Isis one day asked him about Horus’ health, because she thought he was sick and  Thot, the doctor-god, was the best to give a diagnostic. He apparently answered by a long speech, so long and so boring and so unrelated to the subject that Isis told him “You know, Thot… You’re quick to think but slow to answer.” Which was a polite way of saying “GO STRAIGHT TO THE ANSWER YOU POMPOUS ARROGANT LITTLE MISTER-…

The Ways of the Dead Review

Last night, I was halfway through writing up the episode plot and taking notes for my weekly episode review. My computer crashed and restored from a previous backup so I lost everything. (I blame it on Mr. World for retiring Technical Boy.) I'm not going to have time to rewatch the episode again till probably this weekend so I wanted to at least put something up for this episode. I don't know if I'll come back and fill this in with more thoughts but this is all the energy I could muster for now.

Well, I couldn't resist (no spoiler)

(I know I shouldn't be polluting the Wikia with short and meaningless blogposts but I had to shout it out)

I watched episode 7 of American God. “The Treasure of the Sun”.

BY GOSH WAS THAT A GOOD FUCKING EPISODE!!!!

Seriously, season two had weaknesses and let downs, but it also had some fucking brilliant episodes.

Now I have all my hopes up for the final episode.

Last thoughts for now on American Gods

No, I won’t stop watching the show. It’s just that I have don’t have enough thoughts and questions to make an entire “review” of each episodes, or at least an interesting one.

“The ways of the dead” was the first episode of all American Gods that disappointed me. None in the first season disappointed me, and all the previous one of the second season had something to satisfy me. Not this one.

The subplot with Sweeney, Laura, the Baron and Brigitte was a good point for this episode, really, nothing to say. The confrontation between a monotheistic Salim and the Jinn was also a very good point. But the rest of the episode felt… just like dead ends, and emptiness. This was definitively a filler episode, where nothing goes nowhere. Wednesday goes …

I should have posted this before my previous blog post

It's something I wrote on Tumblr some days ago, wanted to post it here. The spoilers by Neil just reinforced this thinking I had. So here it is

At first I wanted to make a post about how I liked that the New Gods in the TV show are much stronger and powerful than their book counterpart.

And then I realized why. It’s because the four-group system of the New Gods was destroyed by the show.

Let me explain.

If you recall my post about the four groups of New Gods in the book (a post I will soon remake), the New Gods we saw (like Technical Boy or Media) were only representatives of bigger groups of New Gods. For example, Technical Boy was the representative of the “Techies”, the gods of technology. And Media seemed to be linked to the “Players”, a …

Oh boy, New Gods spoilers by Neil himself

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy...

So there is this interview with Neil Gaiman that just came out. Link right under, right there. And he talks about season two alright, but he also drops some light spoilers about the New Gods, spoilers that are supposed to appear in the next episodes... And while it doesn't spoil the story, it's mostly stuff about the working and identity of the New Gods. It's not much but it's still interesting and explains some stuff. So under the link to the interview, it's spoiler zone.

AG The Greatest Story Ever Told reaction

I’m so glad there was a Coming to America story for a New God. Truly, I had such a smile on my face. I’m a bit disappointed that when Technical Boy first manifested himself in America it wasn’t a bit more as his book-self, but well, it’s two different characters after all.

I love that Mama-ji works in every Motel America ever. That’s so funny.

There wasn’t much of New Media in this episode. I don’t have anything to add for now.

Now we see why the New Gods fear Mister World. Him crushing Tech’s eyes was such a good scene.

I have to admit, the whole scene with Technical Boy and the CEO… I had a hard time understanding it. Mostly because I understood nothing of what these people said. The drawback of being French and watching an unsubtitled eng…

American Gods. Muninn. My reaction

Honestly, I liked this episode. Better than the previous one.

I was afraid of how they would handle Argus. It ended up going very well. I wondered how they would fit the idea of a surveillance system named after Argus into the New Gods mythology and link it to the ancient Greek mythology.

I love the idea that every time Argus needs to be slain and is reborn in a new shape, always repeating his original myth. I also love how Argus kept adapting itself - first he was the all-seeing guardian that never sleeps, then he was the all-knowing library, he then lived through as surveillance systems, as the “ever-watching eye” and as the Illuminati. And it’s true there’s so much to take with the idea of the “eye”, especially in American culture (that l…

The Beguiled Man - reaction

So… apparently Mister Wood and Mr Stone were both present in The Beguiled Man… It’s right there in the credits: Mr Wood played by Eric Daniel, and Mr Stone played by Chris Mark (who are different from the four Mr Town’s Agents played by Brent Jones, Vincent Rother, Alain Moussi and Kostas Tourlentes).

… I wonder how they will play it with how Mr. Wood was portrayed in the first season. Even though, it’s true that the Mr. Wood of the first season wasn’t officially called Mr. Wood, it was simply a nickname Mr. Wednesday gave to the tree-god.

And also, here Mr. Town knows that the New Gods are the New Gods, unlike in the book? So does it still mean that Mr. Town is human-like or more god-like? After all he says “I work for the New Gods” so h…

American Gods Season 2 Episode 1 reaction

(Note: This was originally written and posted right after I viewed the first episode of the second season, so things have been updated and changed since then).

It was a good episode. I’m back in the mood, baby! No, seriously, it was like watching the first season, I didn’t see much difference. Maybe it was a bit less “grandiose” but it was still beautiful and interesting.

  1. So, actually Easter refused to reappear because Wednesday killed her rabbits. On one hand, I’m like “What? It’s too easy!”. But on the other hand… it makes perfect sense. And it’s actually something I thought about when watching the Easter episode. When Wednesday killed the rabbits with his car, I thought to myself “And that’s how he hopes to conquer Eostre? That’s a bad s…

The New Gods sitcom

With…

The New family

Mister World as the over-bearing, over-controlling but kind-hearted and peace-desiring father. Media as the old-fashioned, seductive, charming but stern mother. Technical Boy as the rebellious, bratty, loud-mouthed older brother. New Media as the manipulative, passive-agressive, spotlight-stealing little sister.

And The Caretaker as… well, the house caretaker.

And…

The Neighborhood

With Vulcan, the old guy a bit too obsessed with firearms. Easter, Media’s best buddy and the socialite always throwing some parties. Bilquis, the seductive teacher of Technical Boy. Argus, the neighbor who likes to spy on everyone. And Mr. Wood, the excentric gardener.

Technical Boy (as in the books)

EDIT: I know it should be "as in the book", not "as in the books", sorry about that

WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD

I – INTRODUCTION

Let’s begin with the first of the New Gods: The Technical Boy
In the book, he is the embodiment of the Internet and the god of computers. However, an important thing should be recalled here: we are not talking about Internet and computers as we know them today. We are speaking about the 90s Internet and the 90s computers. We are talking of a time that happened before Twitter, Facebook or Gmail. A technology that came before the iPhones, the smartphones and the tablets. As Neil Gaiman said himself, the “technical boys of 1999” were living in their mother’s basement and still learning how they could order a pizza through th…

I already posted stuff on DeviantArt (as Illord) and on Tumblr (as mask131). But since I hadn't had a lot of reaction with season two (there used to be a lot of fans at the time of season 1, but now they all seem to have vanished).

So, I'm just toying a bit around with how to create a blog post here.

Oh, and I will also probably post a ton of blog posts about the New Gods.

Muninn Review

This episode should come with a trigger warning for the burning of the Library of Alexandria. That still makes me so angry and it happened over two millennia ago.
